Wanna Make an AA Meeting? Well, Pick Up Your Phone!
No community is immune to the coronavirus virus, let alone to the impact this deadly disease is having on every element of society. That, of course, includes the recovery community, which has seen an end to nearly all of its extremely vital in-person support programs, including AA meetings. And while “safer-at-home” truly does mean we’re all safer when we stay at home (so do it!), the isolation brought about by such a directive does pose a clear and present danger to our recovery.
But just because face-to-face meetings are currently verboten, doesn’t mean we have to completely forsake necessary support. It simply means we’ve got to get creative. Go online. Make a few calls. Do some homework. In other words, figure out a way to maintain your sobriety through these turbulent times, no matter what it takes. And realize that to do otherwise would be a risk to your very life.
Yes, that means making meetings. Still. Okay, so your homegroup may not currently be assembling at the clubhouse down the block each week. That doesn’t however mean that those friendly faces aren’t getting together online. And if they aren’t, well, others are. Lots and lots of others. In fact, AA now boasts almost as many online meetings as there are alcoholics.
Go Ahead, Make My Meeting
Okay, so maybe we’re exaggerating a bit. Still, there are a whole helluva lot of meetings out there. In fact, AA World Services even has its very own app for all that. It’s called Meeting Guide, and it’s available for both Android and iOS. This being brought about by the good folks at World Services, the completely free and easy-to-use app spans the globe and includes listings for over 100,000 weekly meetings.
Pink Cloud’s Rooms is another globe-spanning meeting app though in this case the meetings include NA, CMA and Al-Anon, as well as AA. In fact, its site boasts listings for over 200,000 meetings in 32 different countries. Unlike AA’s Meeting Guide however, Rooms will cost you 99 cents a month after the first 30 days, though to be fair the app also includes a calendar, notes, contacts and a few other sobriety-boosting features.
If you happen to be down here in South Florida (or just want to tap into one of the most robust sober scenes in the country), we at Healing Properties have provided a week’s worth of locally-held meetings that are sure to help you along in sobriety. Like everything listed on AA’s Intergroup site, each listing is an A+ 100% bona fide gathering of and for 12 Steppers. And like everything brought about by AA, the only requirement for attendance is a desire to stop drinking.
