Jelly Roll Claims California Sobriety Keeps Him Off Hard Drugs
. Jelly Roll lays it out loud and clear (albeit in the third person): “I think in a world without weed, Jelly Roll’s drinking codeine and popping Xanax and snorting cocaine again, but a world with weed, I’ll be alright.” TMZ says “it’s a bold statement.” And Jelly Roll himself admits it’s a hot-button topic. But who are we to argue about what keeps a man sober?
For Jelly Roll, pot happens to be something of a wonder drug, helping to significantly lower his anxiety and lessen the need to find relief in riskier drugs. And while Jelly Roll might not be fully sober, when it comes to banning hard drugs, he’s a huge voice against fentanyl and for people dealing with drug addiction. Back in January, he even appeared in front of Congress to back anti-fentanyl legislation.
California Sober
Jelly Roll of course isn’t the first to come out as California Sober (that is, sober but for the occasional puff and/or sip). Demi Lovato, The Weeknd and Billy Idol have also copped to the lifestyle in the past (though Demi’s since dropped the habit and gone full-on cold turkey) Jelly Roll is the first to bring the “hot button topic” to light.
But Jelly Roll seems to have been taken as much with the California lifestyle as with Cali sobriety. How else get fit enough to run a 5k? In April he told Billboard “I’m probably down 70-something pounds,” (that’s on top of the nearly 200 he had shed in the previous couple of years.) “I’ve been really kicking ass, man. I’m doing two to three miles a day, four to six days a week. I’m doing 20 to 30 minutes in the sauna, six minutes in a cold plunge every day. I’m also eating healthy right now.”
See what we mean?
Then on May 7, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the singer crossed the finish line in the first ever 2 Bears 5K and it all came to fruition,. The run, hosted by comedians Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer, was held as part of the Netflix Is A Joke comedy festival. And for all intents and purposes, Jelly Roll was the star. After all, this is a guy who couldn’t walk a mile just a year ago; now he’s running 5k? That’s crazy!
It’s also inspirational. So if weed happens to slow Jelly Roll’s roll enough to get him this fit, we say have at it!
And anyway, Jelly Roll’s position on addiction seems perfectly adult to us.
“I have friends that are in the program that are totally against any kind of mind-altering anything,” he told Taste of Country..” I respect that. Really. I have so much respect for those people. That’s just not how my sobriety worked out.”
Everybody is different; we’ve got to allow our sobriety to be different as well.
